Students took time out of their school day to donate blood to the American Red Cross at the blood drive Monday, Oct. 2.

According to the blood drive results given by American Red Cross, there were 55 presenting donors, and a total of 41 units of blood received.

The American Red Cross came with trucks full of equipment to set up in the auxiliary gym. Out of the 13 team members running the drive, most of them were nurses. The first job of the nurses is to check students in to make sure they have a safe medical history in order to donate.

Once they are checked in, students are taken over to where the nurses will draw the blood. Once the blood is drawn, the nurses make sure it is properly contained and labeled.

Assistant principal Mr. Johnson, says that there was an overwhelming response from students for the blood drive.

It is reported that from the Wednesday when the blood drive was announced to the following Friday, 83 students signed up to donate.

Mr. Johnson, said, “It was impressive to fill spots that quickly!”

He believes that blood drives are important because “there’s always a need, and every donation can save three lives.”

The need for blood is especially important because of the recent tragedies, such as the harsh hurricanes and fatal shootings.

Another blood drive will take place at Dunlap High School next January or February.
