Other Mid-Illini coaches have had a hard time keeping up with DHS football coach Brett Cazalet’s offense this year. In fact, his skills have even drawn the attention of the Chicago Bears.

Earlier this season he was recognized for his stellar efforts by being named the Week 5 All-Star Coach of the Week.

Coach Cazalet said he was very humble about receiving the award.“It’s a nice reward for the team, it means you have a good team. I see it as a reward for the team not really reflective of the coach.”

Receiving this award had Cazalet’s emotions high, “It made me reflect on the group of boys I have this year, and all the obstacles we have overcome.”

With coaching in his blood, Cazalet has dreamed his whole life about becoming a coach like his father.

“I grew up learning to count on the scoreboards at Friday night football games. Football has always been apart of what I do. I have known my whole life I was going to be a teacher and coach.”

However, Cazalet wasn’t always a coach. For four years Cazalet was in the Marine Corps. He explained what the most intriguing memory of the Corps was by saying, ”I spent a lot of time overseas in Africa when the Somali situation was taking place, and in the Middle East and on a boat for six straight months. It was interesting to see how all the great leaders got stuff done.”

Coach Cazalet is also a father of two: one boy, one girl, which he says has changed his perspective on coaching. “I think being a father hasn’t changed how I treat people, but it made me reprioritize my time at home. I will start bringing my kids to practice next year like my dad with me.”

Cazalet says his proudest moment as a coach is always the end of the year ceremony. “When you see all the seniors together for their last time, it evokes a lot of emotion and reflection.”

On Saturday, Coach Cazalet and his Eagles found out they are the Mid-Illini conference champions, and they are the No. 1 seed in the 5A South bracket in the IHSA playoffs.
