Three Dunlap High School Speech Team captains ranked this past weekend during the IHSA High School State Speech Competition.
Last Friday and Saturday, hundreds of schools across Illinois came to the Peoria Civic Center to compete in many speech-related categories such as Dramatic Duet Acting or Prose Reading.
Junior Emma Ross, Dunlap Speech Team captain, ranked 18th place in the Humorous Interpretation category. Senior Bailey Shoemaker placed 9th for her Oratorical Declamation performance. Junior Rabiah Na’Allah’s Special Occasion Speaking performance garnered her 8th place.
¨At state each person performs once each night in different sections,¨ says Ross, ¨Each category has three sections that go if they are ranked top of their group both days, they will ‘break’ to finals. The top six move on to compete for medals.¨
No one from Dunlap has broke finals at the state meet since the 1980s.
“The IHSA Speech State Competition was such a good experience!¨ says Na´Allah, ¨Seeing competitors from schools all over Illinois to watching the performances of some of the most talented people in the speech circuit was nothing short of amazing.¨
